Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was on television as Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on the ABC show Roseanne. The parents of her did not want her to take on acting roles until she was an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry claimed that she was too timid to perform at the age of 16, but she began performing in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry relocated in New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led her back to California which is where she discovered theatre jobs.
